What Is the Milan Tourist Tax?

The tassa di soggiorno (tourist tax) is a city tax applied to all overnight stays in Milan. It was introduced to fund tourism infrastructure, cultural events, and city maintenance. Every visitor staying in any type of accommodation — hotels, B&Bs, apartments, or holiday rentals — must pay this tax.

How Much Is the Tourist Tax in Milan?

Rates for 2026 depend on the accommodation category:

• 1-star hotels & hostels: €2.00 per person/night
• 2-star hotels: €3.00 per person/night
• 3-star hotels: €4.00 per person/night
• 4-star hotels: €5.00 per person/night
• 5-star hotels: €7.00 per person/night
• Short-term rentals & apartments: €4.00 per person/night

The tax is charged for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights. After that, no additional tax is due.

Who Is Exempt?

• Children under 14 years old
• Disabled persons and their caregivers
• Police and military on duty
• Patients receiving medical treatment (with documentation)
• Drivers and tour guides accompanying groups

How to Pay

The tourist tax is collected directly by the accommodation at check-in or check-out. It is paid separately from the room rate. Accepted methods include cash or card, depending on the property.
